CC71 presents serious safety issues on Hwy. 71 West to CAMPO Board on March 18, 2008 CC71 presented the Hwy. 71 Safety Improvement Petition with over 10,000 signatures to the CAMPO board. Members of the group testified on the severity of increased accidents and fatalities over the past 2 years and requested funding to be prioritized for safety improvements on Hwy 71. We asked the CAMPO board to review the TxDOT action plan for Hwy. 71, identified the Bee Creek Valley as being a high risk area where many of the recent fatalities and accidents have occurred, and requested that this particular 2 mile stretch of road be placed at the top of TxDOT’s planned improvement projects on Hwy.71. Senator Watson, the chairman of CAMPO, told the board members that, “You should rest assured that everybody on this policy board recognizes that with Highway 71, if this many deaths were from a tornado or a hurricane, that it would be declared a natural disaster.
