CC71 went to the Capitol office of State Senator Kirk Watson Wednesday, February 27, to introduce themselves to Steve Scheibal, Watson's Policy Director, and discuss the group's mission and goals. Senator Watson has been instrumental in working with Precinct 3 County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty and State Representative Valinda Bolton to press the Texas Department of Transportation into a plan of action for safety improvements on Highway 71. CC71 members discussed TxDOT's proposed improvements and a possible plan for barriers in parts of the Bee Creek Valley. The group also briefed Scheibal on the Tuesday meeting of CC71 with local law enforcement officials, Representative Bolton, Bob Moore (Daugherty's Executive Assistant) and Marco Alvarado, Director of Communications for Lake Travis ISD. Senator Watson has expressed keen interest in the enforcement side of the safety equation for the highway. Scheibal explained the Sunset process that TxDOT is currently undergoing on the state level, a review of state agency operations that is done every 12 years. He encouraged the group to keep Senator Watson up to date on the TxDOT action in the region.
